I didn't get much time to spend on the motor tonight (Rachel had a concert), but I bought some more tools and removed the front pulley bolt, the front pulley, the timing cover, the cam followers (are these what we call tappets??), and the head bolts.  One distressing sight was a couple of chunks of metal that I found in the front chamber that houses the cam followers.  They look to me to be the exact size and curvature of the tops of the cam followers (see pictures below).  None of those in the motor appear to be damaged, so they must have been left from a previous rebuild.  I still don't know for sure what caused the problem in the 3rd cylinder and the fact that it's seized up.  I need to find out from Randy if I can remove the crank, then try to tap (or drift) the pistons out.

This picture shows the mounting points on the right side of the motor.

Showing how to remove head bolts.  Note the shine off the chrome taillight trim in the background!

Location of fuel overflow on left side of motor.

Timing cover.  I'm not sure why this picture turned out like this...it really doesn't look that bad!

This shows the chunks of metal I found in the front chamber that houses the cam followers.

Ditto.
