Well, I got some bad news from Randy today. He checked the crank and cam, and while the crank can be saved, it looks like it will need to be turned ($75). The cam, on the other hand, looks like it will need to be replaced. But at least it's available for about $200. The crank isn't available through either of the places I have catalogs for, so it's good that it can be turned. I'll try to decide in the next day or two what to do for sure. Barron's already has the block and head to do machine work on them, so I guess I'll be giving them more business.
I cleaned some more parts tonight...mostly bolts and nuts, but also the oil pump. When I took it apart, I found that a piece inside is broken into 3 pieces...I wonder if that had anything to do with the cracked head and the worn cam and crank??
I also cleaned all the paint off the fan and its pulley. I still
need to do some detail work to remove paint in some hard to get to places
(like around rivets), but then they will be ready to paint.
