We're getting closer! Tomorrow we take a big step, when we try
to fire the motor! My brother hooked up the carbs and some other stuff
on the motor today, while I hooked up the batteries and worked on the dash.
I struggled a little with the turn signal lenses because the originals
were worn out. I finally cleaned the black paint off the green circles
that were behind the indicators, then took a heat gun to them so I could
flatten them, and taped them to the back of the dash. I also had to
make some new rubber boots around the bulb holders to seal the light in. I
made them out pieces of an old inner tube that my dad gave me a few years
ago. We've gotten quite a bit of use out of that old inner tube, making
various seals.
I also installed a fuel filter. This car didn't have one from
the factory, but I thought it was a good idea I installed it just
ahead of the fuel tank outlet, near the fuel gauge sending unit. It
shouldn't be too noticeable, yet it's very accessible.
Here's the fuel filter I installed.
Here's a shot of the fuel line affixed above the rear axle. I made
a couple of rubber grommets (out of the previously mentioned inner tube)
to put in the clamps for some padding on this clamp and on another one near
the fuel pump.
Here's where I clamped the fuel line and the wiring, just behind the fuel
pump. I don't think they were clamped here originally, but it looked
like a good idea.
Another shot of the fuel filter, after installing the clamps.
And again (I guess I really liked this, huh?).
Here's the carbs...really looks sharp! Notice the grubby valve cover.
My brother has the other one, trying to install the plates on the top
of it. We'll use this one for now.
Here's the battery access panel in place...hard to spot since everything
is so black!
Another shot of the carbs from the front.
And here's the Interstate batteries in place.
I hung the rear bumper today. It's not tight., just hanging there.
