Success!! It fired up, and better than anticipated. At first,
we could tell it wanted to fire, but something wasn't right. So we
got to looking at the timing and found that the distributor was installed
180 degrees out. Rather than spend the time to re-orient the distributor
(although we've done that now), we just connected the plug wires according
to the way the distributor was installed, and tried again. After about
3 revolutions, she fired right up...and sounded great! Check out the
recording I made (my digital camera will also record sounds):

We let it run about 30 seconds, then shut it down and proceeded
to installing the radiator and filling the cooling system. Before we
could fill it, we had to retrieve the drain cock from the old radiator out
in the snow and clean it up. Once we started filling the cooling system
we learned the hard way that the drain cocks are open with the handle perpendicular
to it's body, not in line with it's body like most valves. The one
in the radiator was easy enough to see, but the one in the block was impossible
to see beforehand, so we took our chances. Now I have a mess on the
garage floor to clean up. After the radiator was full and the distributor
re-oriented, we fired it up again and let it get up to temperature and set
the timing. Sometime during the week or next weekend we'll do the
full tune up, including setting the carbs.
Here's the motor...looks like it's ready to run. This was taken
just before we tried to fire it up.
Here's my brother fiddling with the carbs after we fired it up.
And again.
Here's the original radiator drain cock before cleaning...
...and here it is after cleaning and clear coating.
